This is a collection of book reviews or comments that I wrote and posted on LM_net for other librarians and were not meant for students. They are organized by the author's last name. All the opinions expressed are mine alone. I was a school librarian for 20 years and am now retired.
My reviews do not give reading levels purposely. I frequently did not agree with the ones printed on the books and I found many people follow them too literally. Accepted reading levels also may vary from building to building and community to community. As a substitute for grade level, I have given the number of pages - I know this is not the same. If there is some aspect to the book which indicates a level of some kind, I will mention it in the review.
Before I retired, I maintained a policy of reading all fiction books before I placed them on the shelves. I did not do this to censor but rather to know the books. If I read them before I cataloged them, then I knew they all will be read. Because I read the books in this fashion, the new fiction books trickled into the library throughout the year, rather then all appearing in September.
A big part of my job as a Middle School Educational Media Specialist involved helping students select books. The only way to know the books is to read them. Kids will be encouraged to read if they see us reading so.... get out there and read!
